Working with a slightly unorthodox method of oil painting, Dale Strong uses a pair of converted iced teaspoons to apply the paint to canvas.   By eliminating the use of brushes and turpentine, he retains the brilliance and intensity of the colors, while also deterring deterioration and aging of the work.   He sometimes uses a brush sparingly for intricate detail work;   however, Dale relies almost exclusively on the iced teaspoons.

Allow Dale Strong to guide you step by step, and in four lessons you will complete your first painting!   These 4 lessons are merely an introductory approach and not the complete training needed to become an artist.

Dale Strong has taught his oil painting methods in various universities, colleges, community education programs and privately.   He lives in Tucson, AZ., and is available to teach in the greater Tucson area.

Experience oil painting lessons both for the amateur and experienced artist with a time-tested technique.   Develop and improve your skill, even if you have never painted before.   Learn about composition, perspective, color mixing, layout and site selection.   Paints and converted iced teaspoons will be furnished with the lessons. Canvases are at an additional charge.

Working with a slightly unorthodox method of oil painting, Dale Strong uses a pair of iced teaspoons converted to palette knives with a limited palette of seven colors used in painting. By eliminating the use of brushes, medium, and turpentine, he retains the brilliance and intensity of the colors, while also deterring deterioration and aging of the work. He uses brushes only for intricate detail work; however, Dale relies almost exclusively on the converted iced teaspoons.   Dale Strong's method of teaching oil painting is an actual hands-on process.   With each area of instruction, a text is supplied to the student. To start, a study and instruction of how to interpret the "Mind's Eye" is discussed in order to demonstrate the art of seeing the scene or subject as it actually is, and then modifying it with your emotions.

1. The student is taught how to handle the modified palette knives, (the use of the areas of the knives themselves).

2. The student learns about the basic seven oil colors that are standard on his palette.

3. Sketching the canvas with compositional lines (mere indications of the composition) and outlining the scene are both important for the student to accomplish before applying paint.

4. Following that, the student learns to mix the different shades that the limited palette can create.

5. Learning to blend the colors and shades on the canvas, with the modified blending knife (the rounded one) is the next phase taught.

6. Learning to draw specific shapes and lines using the modified drawing knife (angled shaped) follows.

7. The importance of and demonstration of perspective is covered.

8. The importance of and demonstration of composition is next.

9. The importance of and demonstration of color hue perspective continues the student's understanding.

10. The importance of definition perspective completes the technical learning.

11. There is a discussion and demonstration of what it takes to make a technically accepted creation that is required for most competitions.

12. Learning the importance of critiquing your painting subjectively and making corrections, before calling it "finished" and signing your name is also emphasized.

These are the steps that Dale uses in his lessons, enforced with a printed text on each step for the student to place in his/her permanent art library.

This outlines the individual instruction in Landscape Oil painting from the International Award winning artist, Dale Strong.   His art is in the private collections of Frank Sinatra, Luciano Pavorotti, Chita Rivera, Johnny Carson, Walter Mondale and others.
